Weather conditions on the Tibetan Plateau can be extreme. The average altitude on the race course is around 3000m – it can be more than 25C during the day, but at night the temperatures can easily plunge below zero. A snow storm can appear unexpectedly and temperature can go down as low as -15C, with whiteout conditions.

Be prepared for the cold – you will need a good sleeping bag and warm clothes. (More details can be found in the Equipment section). It is better to expect the temperature to be below freezing at night despite the heat of the day. Hypothermia is an ever-present risk especially when the runner is exhausted and sleep-deprived.
